one week that shapes a lifetime

Illinois Boys State is proud to offer nine scholarships totaling over $15,000 each year to Boys State participants. All scholarships are based upon merit achieved during the Boys state program, with the exception of the Samsung Scholarship as well as the essay and oration contests, which may be prepared ahead of time. While a citizen may receive more than one scholarship, no single citizen may receive cumulative awards of more than $5000 at the state level.

Boys State, June 11-17, 2016.

At Boys State, students (who become Boys State citizens) experience the rights, privileges, duties and responsibilities of citizenship. The 'learn by doing' training is accomplished as citizens create their own city, county, and state governments. Citizens accomplish this task using two mythical parties: Nationalist and Federalist.

Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies and seminars. Citizens debate a public affairs topic, chosen for each year's session. Policy recommendations are forwarded to the Governor of Illinois and to the leaders of the Illinois General Assembly. Embedded within the program is an afternoon of intramural sports, a band, and other activities as well.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • All boys must have completed one semester of 11th grade and must have one or more semesters in high school to complete after attending Boys State.

Students must be sponsored by a parent, school, school organization, civic organization, bank, or Legion Post. Registration to be completed by May 15.  Barrington American Legion Post 158 will provide the registration fee for up to three students from Barrington District 220 High School.
